Only the first swath cut by the scythe is difficult.
Meet the scythe-master and learn the history, care and use of this often misunderstood old world agriculture tool- the scythe. We will be mowing Lucy Perry’s field off Upper Brown’s Creek in Celo!

The scythe has much importance in the history of agriculture and is one of the most misunderstood “old world” tools. The subtleties required to become comfortable with the use of the scythe are something people do not stumble upon in the typical day-to-day. We are lucky enough to have Larry Cooper of Gulland Forge visiting to show us the scythe way.

With just a few minutes, Larry can help demystify and better understand the simple beauty of this amazing tool. Bring your scythes, sharpening equipment and an eagerness to learn this traditional way of mowing. We will have extra scythes and tools available if you do not currently own a scythe. We will also have two scythes for sale first on a first come basis.

About Larry:
Larry Cooper has been a blacksmith for over 37 years and in 2008 started manufacturing and marketing a garden tillage tool, the broadfork. He has always appreciated good quality, efficient hand tools. Some of his interests are mowing with a scythe, draft oxen, timber frame carpentry, canoeing and kayaking, hiking in beautiful places, writing and dobermans.

Donations to Larry are appreciated but not required.

“...My long scythe whispered and left the hay to make."
