Kurinuki is a Japanese method of carving a pot out of a solid block clay. The first class students will receive 2 solid blocks of clay and tools to use to carve out the interior and shape and hone the exterior to make 2 ceramic cups. We will use a variety of rasps, knives and ceramic carving tools to make a functional cup out of a block of clay. The second class students will glaze and decorate their work with ash and shino glazes and iron oxide and wax. Your cups will be fired to cone 10 in a gas reduction kiln for you to keep.

Melissa is a studio potter in Asheville, NC. She makes functional pottery from clay she digs and processes herself. She runs an 8000 square foot warehouse studio housing over 20 artists in SE Asheville called SouthSide Studios.
