*THIS CLASS WILL TAKE PLACE AT A SISTER LOCATION IN CANDLER, NC
Grafting is an important skill for growers of tree crops at just about any scale. Grafting grants access to the vast riches of crop diversity that’s available: if you can graft, there’s virtually no limit to the number of varieties you can grow and to the dollars you can save on plant material. It may seem like wizardry to the uninitiated, but grafting is a skill that anyone can learn and master with some patience and practice.

This 3-hour workshop will provide an introduction to grafting with the goal of giving participants all the basic information they need to begin developing the skill. The first portion of the class will cover the why, what, when, and how of grafting. The second half will focus on hands-on learning and practice. Plant material will be provided for practicing. Two apple rootstocks are included in the cost of the class.

About the instructor:

Justin Holt, co-founder of Nutty Buddy Collective, learned to graft about 10 years ago. Soon after getting the hang of it, he and a partner launched Nutty Buddy Nurseries, a small nursery operation where they grafted 100’s of heirloom and interesting fruit varieties. Justin maintains orchards with the Nutty Buddies, helps tend fruit trees in public spaces throughout the Asheville area, and offers consultation and fruit and nut tree services.

Apple rootstocks, scionwood, and other plants and supplies will be available at the workshop for sale.  Attendees should bring their own grafting knife. Knives can be purchased locally at Villagers

Time: 10am-1pm
Date: March 12, 2023
Location: Ruby Ranch
Price: $30-$60 sliding scale (includes two apple rootstocks!)

The Ruby Ranch is located 20 minutes from Asheville in Candler, North Carolina. There is plenty of parking and a bathroom on site. If it is rainy or cold the class will take place inside the greenhouse. Children are also welcome to attend, though we request that parents are aware of their general whereabouts. While this is a safe spot, it is a farm and there is a small retention pond near the teaching space. There are some toys on site.

When you arrive at the farm, you will come to a 'Y' in the road. Go over the bridge on the right where there is a sign for Southeastern plant nursery. Pull ahead and park near the main building and greenhouses and you will see us there!

***SLIDING SCALE***

In order to have equitable access, we offer all of our classes at a sliding scale as a way to make our classes more affordable to more people. The sliding scale is a simple tiered pricing system that allows people to choose the price they are able to pay, within a specified range. Pay what you can, no one is turned away for lack of funds.
