Learn the beautiful and ancient Japanese resist-dyeing technique known as shibori, in tandem with natural indigo dyeing. We will create unique patterns on fabric using  folding, tying, and binding resist techniques to dye four cotton bandanas and one silk scarf. You will also learn the basics of mixing and maintaining a natural fructose indigo dye bath. We will also discuss vat care, upkeep, and maintenance. This is the perfect technique to breathe new life into your closet or old textiles you have at home! Students are welcome to bring their own small items (limited to the size of a t-shirt) from home to dye. Any natural fiber items will take the indigo dye—cotton, linen, hemp, silk, wool, etc.

About the Instructor:

Kristin Arzt is a natural dyer, educator, gardener and designer, splitting her time between Oakland, California and Western North Carolina. Kristin believes that by exploring the collision of textiles, plants and sustainability, she can help make the study of natural dyes accessible to everyone through education and enthusiasm.

When not teaching in-person and online courses, Kristin grows her own seasonal dye plants in her home garden for closer experimentation; often sharing seeds and sprouts with students. After becoming enamored with the world of natural color, Kristin has taken years to expand her toolkit, traveling far and wide to learn directly with specialized teachers in the dye community. She has studied with Kathy Hattori, Catharine Ellis, Joy Boutrup, and many more amazing instructors.

She serves on the board of directors of Local Cloth, an Asheville-based nonprofit organization, supporting its mission to educate the community on sustainable textiles and regenerative fiber.
