In this five-hour workshop, learn how to make biochar and its many beneficial uses, including greatly enhancing soil life and fertility. Discover innovative ways to maximize its uses for dynamically carbon-negative farming.

WORKSHOP GOALS
Raise awareness about biochar ecosystem services, including carbon sequestration; forest management and wildfire/WUI risk.
Demonstrate biochar production using a flame-cap kiln.

For land managers and property owners, permaculturists and organic gardeners. During this 5-hour workshop you will learn how charred biomass (biochar) made from non-merchantable woody residue left from logging and pruning can increase soil productivity, promote beneficial soil microbes, reduce wildfire risk, decrease emissions, and slow climate change.

Permaculturalist Joseph Bass will give an overview of the history and science of biochar production and use, while we participate hands-on in the creation of Biochar!
We’ll explore small to large-scale biochar production theory and practice and apply that theory in a hands-on demonstration of loading, firing and quenching in a variety of kilns for producing biochar in the field.

1 hour break from 1-2p - Farm-to-table lunch included!
Time: 11a – 5p (Weather permitting, Swimming in the South Toe River during lunch break or when we finish - bring your swim suit!)
Date: Sunday October 2
Location: Lower Browns Creek in Celo, NC (Precise directions and instructions will be given once a ticket is purchased - carpooling is encouraged!)
