Identifying the Edible and Medicinal Plants in your own Backyard

Join author, herbalist, and long-distance hiker Heather Houskeeper for a closer look at the edible and medicinal plants growing in our own backyards, along our city sidewalks, and in the forgotten urban thickets. Class will begin with a slideshow and a lesson on how to easily identify, harvest, and utilize some of our common wild edible and medicinal plants. Homemade herbal tea and wild treats will be provided. We'll then take to the streets for a short walk through our familiar West Asheville community for an experiential lesson in identifying and partaking of our local useful plants.

Heather Houskeeper is a Certified Herbalist, long-distance hiker, and author. She has thru-hiked over 6000 miles on the Appalachian Trail, Mountains-to-Sea Trail, and Finger Lakes Trail, foraging along the way. She is the author of "A Guide to the Edible and Medicinal Plants of the Mountains to Sea Trail" and "A Guide to the Edible and Medicinal Plants of the Finger Lakes Trail System". She enjoys sharing her love and enthusiasm for the plants and the out-of-doors with others through classes, workshops, plant walks, and guided hikes throughout the North and Southeast.
